2025 Book Review #14 – The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton
Tumblr media
I have no memory whatsoever how this charming little mystery ended up on my TBR shelf – it was on some ‘best of’ list or another I skimmed through more than likely. However it happened, I’m happy it did – this was hardly high art, but it was a fun and engaging Twilight Zone episode of a novel, and left me very interested in reading more of Turton’s other work.
The novel is set on a remote island some time after the apocalypse, the only place in the world where the last heroic efforts of preapocalyptic scientists created a barrier to hold back the plague of poisonous fog which boiled up from beneath the world and wiped out all other life. Ninety years later, the three surviving Elders and the omnipresent, mind-reading artificial intelligence Abi guide and rule over a village of a hundred-and-seven, the last remnants of all the refugees who reached the island before the end. Filled with now-irreplaceable medical technology and genetic enhancements, the Elders are fairly literally superhuman and viewed by the generations of villagers who have been born and died since the end of the world with near-religious awe. So when the eldest and most beloved of them dies – and seemingly after directly ordering Abi to wipe everyone else’s memories of the ruinous night before her brutal murder – things get very tense. And that’s before everyone realizes that the barrier holding back the fog was deactivated by a dead man’s switch tied to her heart beat. Now it’s up to the irritatingly curious and irreverent village neerdowell to to solve the mystery and satisfy the system that justice has been done so it will reactivate the barrier before the fog consumes them all.
So this is a very high concept novel. First and foremost, it’s at the moment literally the only book I can remember that more or less pulls off first-person-omniscient narration – the book is told from Abi’s perspective, and all the increasingly sinister asides and bits of context that leak through from it as its attention shifts from one character’s brain to another is a major part of the book’s charm. It is very on brand for me to say the creepy AI is the best character, but as far as compellingly nonhuman intelligence go it is right up there.
It’s also a strikingly misanthropic book – in the literal sense, the book has a very dim view of humanity and the ambiguous but happy ending involves taking the species off the board for at least the foreseeable future. Thematically it’s about getting over the past and trusting your students/children/successors to find their own way in the world without your constant guidance, but on a very literal level this is a story where humanity’s successors are strictly better off with us. And also where a project that in basically every other story I’ve ever read would be the cartoonishly evil plot of a cackling supervillain is portrayed as monstrous in execution but well-intentioned and more tragically impossible than evil in concept. It’s an interesting shift in perspective from most self-consciously humanist sci fi I’ve read.
The actual mystery is very fun and satisfying twisted and obscured by all the other dirty secrets the Elders are keeping from each other – the narrative used the memory to have multiple people come think they were the murderer and act accordingly in a very satisfying way. That said, I’m not sure the broad strokes twilight zone-ness of the setting really mixed well with the mystery plot – not that it wasn’t used for some fun twists, but it’s more than a bit unclear at points which parts of the world you should carefully interrogate for clues and hints, and which you kind of just need to shrug and take as a given for the story to work.
I admit I do just have a reflexive, contrarian aversion to stories that end up just being someone’s planning going off perfectly. Which isn’t really fair to hold against the book, but on a purely subjective level did make me enjoy the finale and epilogue less than I might have otherwise. Still, all in all this was a fun brain teaser and page-turner. Would recommend, if the synopsis at all appeals.

tbh one of the many, many things that annoys me about the whole "AI" frenzy is seeing people who really should know better ask questions about whether LLMs have Creativity™ or Imagination™ and I'm just like... look, they don't even have agency ok?
You put an animal in a new space, it's most likely that the very first thing it does is react to it - whether with fear or curiosity or any other emotion, it'll often immediately start interacting with that space, seeing what exists within its new surroundings.
"AI" doesn't do any of this - they're fed absolutely massive amounts of training data but not because they're in any way interested in any of it; it's just a process of data crunching, there's no preferences, no selection, no getting bored or asking for more.
And sure, you could argue that brains are also purely reactive systems, but there's a fundamental difference in that LLMs only react if they're prompted to. Even the most domesticated species of the planet, so far removed from their roots that they simply would not be able to survive without us to support them, don't fundamentally need us to be able to exist or act. "AI" does - if you leave an LLM chatbot running and just don't prompt it anything, it also won't be doing anything, it has no capacity for autonomy, no capacity for agency, no curiosity.
You can't have creativity without curiosity - you can't have imagination without a desire to see what might exist beyond your field of view, gaining understanding requires doing investigation. You can't convince me that these things are capable of intelligence when they remain so utterly incapable of doing even the most basic prerequisites of it.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
Tumblr media
Imagine asking Siri about the weather, receiving a personalized Netflix recommendation, or unlocking your phone with facial recognition. These everyday conveniences are powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), a transformative technology reshaping our world. This post delves into AI, exploring its definition, history, mechanisms, applications, ethical dilemmas, and future potential.
What is Artificial Intelligence? Definition: AI refers to machines or software designed to mimic human intelligence, performing tasks like learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Unlike basic automation, AI adapts and improves through experience.
Brief History:
1950: Alan Turing proposes the Turing Test, questioning if machines can think.
1956: The Dartmouth Conference coins the term "Artificial Intelligence," sparking early optimism.
1970s–80s: "AI winters" due to unmet expectations, followed by resurgence in the 2000s with advances in computing and data availability.
21st Century: Breakthroughs in machine learning and neural networks drive AI into mainstream use.
How Does AI Work? AI systems process vast data to identify patterns and make decisions. Key components include:
Machine Learning (ML): A subset where algorithms learn from data.
Supervised Learning: Uses labeled data (e.g., spam detection).
Unsupervised Learning: Finds patterns in unlabeled data (e.g., customer segmentation).
Reinforcement Learning: Learns via trial and error (e.g., AlphaGo).
Neural Networks & Deep Learning: Inspired by the human brain, these layered algorithms excel in tasks like image recognition.
Big Data & GPUs: Massive datasets and powerful processors enable training complex models.
Types of AI
Narrow AI: Specialized in one task (e.g., Alexa, chess engines).
General AI: Hypothetical, human-like adaptability (not yet realized).
Superintelligence: A speculative future AI surpassing human intellect.
Other Classifications:
Reactive Machines: Respond to inputs without memory (e.g., IBM’s Deep Blue).
Limited Memory: Uses past data (e.g., self-driving cars).
Theory of Mind: Understands emotions (in research).
Self-Aware: Conscious AI (purely theoretical).
Applications of AI
Healthcare: Diagnosing diseases via imaging, accelerating drug discovery.
Finance: Detecting fraud, algorithmic trading, and robo-advisors.
Retail: Personalized recommendations, inventory management.
Manufacturing: Predictive maintenance using IoT sensors.
Entertainment: AI-generated music, art, and deepfake technology.
Autonomous Systems: Self-driving cars (Tesla, Waymo), delivery drones.
Ethical Considerations
Bias & Fairness: Biased training data can lead to discriminatory outcomes (e.g., facial recognition errors in darker skin tones).
Privacy: Concerns over data collection by smart devices and surveillance systems.
Job Displacement: Automation risks certain roles but may create new industries.
Accountability: Determining liability for AI errors (e.g., autonomous vehicle accidents).
The Future of AI
Integration: Smarter personal assistants, seamless human-AI collaboration.
Advancements: Improved natural language processing (e.g., ChatGPT), climate change solutions (optimizing energy grids).
Regulation: Growing need for ethical guidelines and governance frameworks.
Conclusion AI holds immense potential to revolutionize industries, enhance efficiency, and solve global challenges. However, balancing innovation with ethical stewardship is crucial. By fostering responsible development, society can harness AI’s benefits while mitigating risks.

Thess vs AI
So, the SAG-AFTRA deal with Replica.
I posted a link about this yesterday, and reblogged several more, but it's something that's massively on my mind. Mostly because it frustrates the hell out of me on so many levels.
Like, this came up in one of the subreddits I follow, and there was this one guy there going on and on and on about how he wanted this exact thing - he wanted to buy voices like art assets because he couldn't afford to hire voice actors and wanted to "realise his dream". And obviously he didn't want to turn around to uni students who might do it for a portfolio reel, some pizza and a promise of a cut of the profits (if any, because seriously, like fuck is this dude's asset-flip bullshit going to sell to any massive degree); he wanted real actors ... except not, because you're not getting real acting out of a computer. (And I'll go back to that point in a minute.)
But ... I have stories that I'd love to turn into games. Thing is, though? If I can't afford actual actors to voice this shit, I will do without voices! A lot of games have done that and done pretty damn well, all things considered! Hell, Dredge has, like, two or three acknowledging noises and the entire rest of the thing is text only. Being able to work within your resource limits to create something wonderful is just ... how you do it, when you're being creative. Everything from movies to cookery demonstrate to us time and time again. So expecting to be able to buy someone's voice off a virtual shelf and plug it into your game just because you can't "realise your vision" without a voice actor voicing a thing? That's just cheap cop-out bullshit.
Going back to the point about real acting - it really grinds my gears that voice actors aren't actually considered actors by a depressing percentage of people. Like, again we have Reddit (sometimes I have to see what the non-Tumblr version of the internet looks like so I can cozy back up into my blanket fort and be glad I curate my online experience so well) going, "There are only just a very few voice actors, right?" when stating how this is fine because it's not going to affect that many people. Which ... dude. There are only a few famous ones that you know about. There are a surprising number of people who make their livings doing "additional voices" in video games and three lines of "shop clerk" or "third soldier from the left" in Western cartoons and anime dubs. It's the same problem actors have - so many people think that the only actors that exist are the really famous ones, not the ones who are doing whatever bit parts they can to pay rent and hopefully find a line on a better role at some point.
Also ... I guess it's a bit like how too many people don't consider actors who are predominantly in sci-fi, fantasy, horror, anything that isn't "serious cinema" as "real actors". When I personally respect those actors an awful lot. I'm sorry - you've got people expressing a mix of fear and defiant rage while staring at the fucking tennis ball standing in for the big-ass demon they won't see until the final cut of the movie. How can you not give that props? Similarly, voice actors are giving those performances to a blank wall. To use our most recent epic example, you've got Astarion giving those lines - everything from debonair malice to barely-controlled terror-pleading to pure trust and gratitude - to a wall. In a little soundproof room. He made up all that - everything he needed to - in his head, and he gave those lines, and it was epic.
A computer cannot do that. I've heard some of Replica's AI voices. Gods, they're awful. Maybe - maybe - you could get that shit for "reactive NPCs" (although I'd personally hate that; even if it was done right, it feels creepy ... and I get a kick out of wandering around a major city covered in blood and nobody appearing to notice, thanks), but it'd still be awful. And you couldn't do it with main characters. Or if you did (and you know some of these awful companies would try), it'd be just awful. We're a long way away from a nuanced performance from a computer.
I respect artists because of the work they put in. Hell, I'm one of them. I see the phrase "AI DM" (yes, one of D&D Beyond's things was talking about a VTT with the potential for an AI DM), and I shudder because ... have they met a D&D group? Ever? At all? How could an AI determine "rule of cool"? Just ... ugh. The idea of an AI scripting TV shows or writing novels ... as a writer, it makes me sick. And actors? They hardly get any respect as it is unless they're some of the big names who do Serious Cinema (or make a hell of a lot of money); this is just shitting all over them even worse. What happens to the next generation of voice actors if greedy-ass corporations give the little roles that most VAs cut their proverbial teeth on to a fucking computer?
I hate it. I keep saying - the whole thing about automation was that it was supposed to let machines do the grunt-work while humans created art, and now it's the other way around as art is considered "just another saleable commodity". So ... maybe it's not that video games stopped being considered art, as I was thinking awhile ago. Maybe it's just that art itself stopped being art, because the money-makers are chewing it up into one big spitball of off-grey blech and throwing it at a wall.

Another AU idea I had is that between The Twisted Ones and The Fourth Closet, when William left the Springtrap suit, He leaked a drop of Remnant, and that drop activated SpringBonnie's AI. Now SpringBonnie is just what they would have been in the diner walking around. No Soul or Agony, Just pure AI reactivated by Remnant. They slowly learn about Freddy's and William's tomfuckery and try to find a way to stop him.
And they get partnered with Jason, because the kid literally only appeared once in the Trilogy, and it would be cute.
Huh. Never thought about Spring-Bonnie having the chance to become sentient in that timeline either.

I can steelman the AI bro's argument. If there was NPC AI that could dynamically remember what they've seen and dynamically react to it, instead of just a series of preset flags, it might make the NPC seem more realistic. It could accomplish those goals better than an ordinary set of flags. Situations where you do something that the game didn't account for and an NPC reacts in a silly manner might be less common.
However...
This wouldn't be a sea change, just a hypothetical way to add a little extra polish to the NPC. It's not comparable to the visual difference between King's Quest and The Callisto Protocol, but that between, I dunno, Death Stranding and The Callisto Protocol.
The technology isn't there yet. If you stuck any modern generative AI into an NPC's AI routine, it would cause more immersion-breaking bugs, not fewer. AI that can dynamically alter NPC dialogue to make it more reactive like I steelmanned above does not exist, and we don't know when or if it will.
Your NPCs can't be voiced by human voice actors if your dialogue can be modified in an infinite number of ways. It either needs to be pure text or use some text-to-speech program—and the technology to generate vocal performances on the fly (without human supervision) really isn't there yet. Does a slightly more reactive AI routine balance out the immersion human voice actors can provide?
Not all games benefit from being "more immersive," and it's debatable whether dynamic AI makes them "more interactive". Plenty of games feel "more interactive" when the player can predict the results of their interactions.
That's why—for instance—stealth game NPCs have such weak AI. It is very silly (and possibly immersion-breaking) that the player can stand just to the left of their vision cone and not be noticed even as the guard walks right past them, or that they go back to their normal routines five minutes after discovering a dead body, but that predictably silly behavior lets the player make a consistent plan, as long as they don't mess up or forget to account for some detail.
Plenty of other genres benefit from predictability. Even RPGs, which seem most likely to benefit from immersive, reactive characters. If you complete a party member's sidequest, you expect to see a conversation that touches on the party member's backstory or motivations or something. But if the dynamic AI decided that the party member didn't trust you quite enough, maybe because they wasted time on a couple fetch quests in the middle of the party member's quest, they might not tell you—or even lie! Would that make the game better?
Sure, you could separate the quest cutscenes from the AI system. But that just emphasizes my first point: Even in its steelman form, even ignoring the questions of technology and presentation, this isn't a radical new change to video game storytelling. At best, it might become a way to make the little details work a little better. At best, it's narrative raytracing.
Tumblr media
Watching AI types say we need generative AI-written dialogue to create a game where NPCs can remember and react to things and thinking of when the Call of Duty devs declared that they had finally pioneered the tech to have fish move away from the player, only for someone to post a video of fish moving away in Super Mario 64 a few minutes after the press conference ended

4 Types of AI: Getting to Know Powerful AI
Tumblr media
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a ubiquitous term, from smart assistants in our phones to complex algorithms powering self-driving cars and personalized recommendations. But "AI" isn't a monolithic entity. It's a vast field with different levels of complexity and capabilities. Understanding these distinctions is crucial, not just for engineers and researchers, but for anyone looking to grasp the true potential and limitations of this transformative technology.
While the academic classification of AI can be more granular, for a practical understanding, most experts broadly categorize AI into four main types based on their capabilities and how they function. Let's explore them:
1. Type 1: Reactive Machines – The Simplest Form of AI
Reactive machines are the most basic form of AI. They operate purely on present data, reacting to specific inputs with predetermined outputs. They have no memory of past experiences, cannot learn from them, and cannot conceptualize a "world" beyond their immediate perceptions.
How they work: They are designed to perform a very narrow set of tasks. Think of them as sophisticated calculators: they take an input and produce an output based on programmed rules, without any "understanding" or context.
Examples:
Deep Blue: IBM's chess-playing supercomputer that famously defeated Garry Kasparov. Deep Blue could identify chess pieces on the board and predict moves, but it had no memory of previous games and no concept of future strategy beyond its current calculations.
Spam Filters: Basic spam filters react to keywords or patterns in emails to flag them as spam.
Limitations: They cannot adapt to new situations or perform tasks outside their programmed scope. They are purely reactive and lack any notion of learning or memory.
2. Type 2: Limited Memory AI – Learning from the Recent Past
This type of AI builds upon reactive machines by incorporating the ability to retain information from the recent past. This "limited memory" allows them to make more informed decisions by considering recent data, though this memory is transient and not stored permanently for long-term learning.
How they work: They use past observations to perform current tasks, but this memory is short-lived. They learn from training data but don't accumulate experience over time in the same way humans do.
Examples:
Self-driving cars: These vehicles observe factors like speed, direction of other cars, traffic lights, and pedestrian movements to navigate. This information is held in their immediate memory for a short duration to inform real-time driving decisions.
Virtual assistants (like Siri or Alexa): They use recent conversational context to understand and respond to user queries, but they don't have a deep, evolving memory of your preferences or past interactions over months or years.
Recommendation systems: While they learn from past user behavior to suggest products, their "memory" is about patterns in the data, not a conscious recollection of individual interactions.
Significance: This is where much of the AI we interact with today resides. It's capable of performing complex tasks by considering immediate context.
3. Type 3: Theory of Mind AI – Understanding Emotions and Beliefs (Conceptual)
This is a significantly more advanced and currently theoretical type of AI. "Theory of Mind" AI refers to systems that would not only understand and remember information but also comprehend human emotions, beliefs, intentions, and desires. They would be able to infer the mental states of others and adjust their behavior accordingly.
How they work: This AI would need to develop a profound understanding of psychology and social interaction. It would involve building complex cognitive and emotional models.
Examples: Currently, there are no fully realized "Theory of Mind" AI systems. This is an active area of research in AI and cognitive science.
Potential Applications (if realized): Truly empathetic chatbots, AI companions with genuine understanding, highly advanced negotiation agents, or even AI therapists.
Challenges: Replicating the complexities of human consciousness, emotions, and empathy in machines is an enormous scientific and ethical hurdle.
4. Type 4: Self-Aware AI – The Pinnacle of Intelligence (Hypothetical)
This represents the ultimate and most speculative level of AI. Self-Aware AI would possess consciousness, self-awareness, and sentient thoughts, much like humans. They would not only understand their own internal states but also have beliefs, desires, and intentions, and critically, be aware of their own existence.
How they work: This would imply machines having sentience, subjective experiences, and the ability to form a "self." The mechanisms for achieving this are currently beyond our scientific understanding.
Examples: This type of AI exists only in science fiction (think of characters like Skynet from Terminator or sentient AI in Westworld).
Ethical and Philosophical Implications: The creation of self-aware AI raises profound ethical, philosophical, and existential questions about rights, consciousness, control, and the future of humanity.
The AI Landscape Today
As of today, the vast majority of operational AI systems fall into the Reactive Machines and Limited Memory AI categories. While we are making incredible strides in limited memory AI, especially with large language models and advanced neural networks, achieving "Theory of Mind" and "Self-Awareness" remains a distant and highly challenging goal, possibly even a hypothetical one.
Understanding these distinctions helps us appreciate the amazing progress in AI while also maintaining realistic expectations about its current capabilities. It allows us to engage in more informed discussions about AI's potential, its ethical implications, and the future of human-AI collaboration.

Empathy Revolution in Franchise Communication
Franchising Today: Embracing Human-Centered Communication
As the world of franchising continues to grow, a focus on human-centered communication is transforming interactions among consultants, franchise owners, employees, and consumers. The focus is gradually shifting from pure transactions to more in-depth, relationship-focused techniques that emphasize empathy, comprehension, and genuine conversation. In the rapidly evolving landscape of U.S. franchise consulting in 2025, embracing inclusive, nuanced communication is imperative—not merely a preference—essential for distinguishing your brand in competitive markets and promoting sustainable franchise development alongside customer allegiance.
The Evolution to Human-Centered Communication
Franchising consultants today grasp that merely dispensing information doesn't equate to building trust or ensuring brand success. Franchise frameworks are now emphasizing authentic, two-way exchanges that transcend superficial interactions. Empathy, understanding, and genuine personalization play pivotal roles in spurring network growth and providing a consistently compelling customer experience. As digital transformation shapes consumer expectations, the capability to meet and surpass these evolving demands is what defines successful franchises in a customer-driven, competitive environment.
Digital interaction tools and artificial intelligence have become essential, not as replacements for personal connections, but as enhancement aids. Consultants are now leveraging digital learning systems, chatbots, and real-time data analysis to offer tailored support and guidance. These technologies address routine tasks, provide targeted onboarding, and facilitate dynamic training for franchisees and staff, allowing them to communicate more efficiently and cater to the individual needs of different locations. By utilizing these tools, the connections among franchisors, franchisees, and customers become more robust and enduring, ensuring brand integrity and stronger relationships at every phase.
Digital Empathy, Inclusive Engagement, and Technology as a Catalyst
Successful brands in the franchise sector aren't avoiding technology—they are utilizing it to foster improved relationships. Prominent franchises like Starbucks and Chick-fil-A leverage social media, loyalty applications, and email initiatives not just for outreach but to encourage feedback, showcase real-time reactivity, and make each customer feel appreciated and significant. These efforts are designed to establish an ongoing conversation that truly spotlights the customer, creating connections across preferred channels and convenient interaction points.
Yet, effective communication necessitates balance. AI and automation relieve human teams from repetitive tasks like scheduling or managing routine requests, focusing instead on nurturing lasting, meaningful associations that technology alone cannot establish. With real-time analytics and digital tools, franchisees can now act as agile local brand ambassadors, swiftly responding to insights on customer behavior and adjusting their approach for enhanced personalization. Training programs are adapting accordingly, incorporating virtual reality simulations, scenario-based learning, and continuous onboarding, equipping teams with the practical skills needed to listen actively, communicate warmly, and deliver authentic brand interactions daily.
Inclusive Strategies for Franchise-Customer Relationships
Scripted responses alone aren't enough. Leading franchising consultants cultivate cultures—both internally and externally—that are steeped in inclusivity and empathy. Internally, this involves fostering open, honest discussions about successes and challenges, ensuring franchisees and staff at all levels feel their input is valuable and have avenues for feedback. Externally, consultants urge franchises to genuinely listen to customers from diverse backgrounds and transform that feedback into services and messages that truly reflect each community’s viewpoint.
Community involvement is fundamental to these initiatives. Brands investing in local events, partnerships, and cause-related marketing not only foster goodwill but also gain valuable insights into customer priorities, driving higher retention and referrals. Digital technology enables precise audience segmentation, facilitating data-driven, highly personalized engagement strategies that forge stronger connections over time. However, it’s crucial for consultants to remember that technology is most effective when it amplifies, rather than replaces, human voices.
Today’s foundation for best communication practices in franchising relies on consistent, multi-directional feedback. By utilizing online reviews, customer surveys, and social media monitoring, analytics helps identify both challenges and opportunities. Consultants can utilize this information to refine communication and engagement strategies, addressing issues swiftly and turning every interaction —even initially negative ones— into opportunities for learning, care, and growth.
Action Steps for Consultants and Franchise Leaders
Empowering the next wave of franchise communications necessitates placing empathy at the core of every strategy. Consultants and franchise leaders should develop communication strategies that embrace multiple channels—email, social media, face-to-face meetings, and mobile platforms—ensuring all stakeholders can provide feedback and feel included in the conversation. Harnessing AI empowers teams by automating repetitive tasks, allowing human focus to remain on crucial service moments, personalized interactions, and thoughtful issue resolution.
Here are six action-oriented steps to nurture human-focused franchise communication:
Craft multi-channel strategies that enable franchisees and customers to easily provide feedback, whether through digital, in-person, or mobile channels.
Harness digital tools and AI to automate routine processes, directing human interaction towards moments needing warmth, understanding, and situational awareness.
Develop ongoing, empathy-driven training programs, incorporating role play, scenario-based exercises, and diversity-awareness activities to bolster communication skills and cultural sensitivity at every level.
Utilize data analytics for customer segmentation to send personalized offers, celebrate milestones, and maintain proactive relationships with loyal clients.
Incorporate real-time feedback loops to promptly address reviews, surveys, and social media mentions, ensuring every stakeholder feels valued.
Deliberately seek underrepresented perspectives within the franchise community and customer base to maintain inclusive communication and ensure all voices influence the brand's journey.
When these strategies are consistently applied, the advantages extend beyond just sales. Franchises flourish into resilient, collaborative environments. Franchisees gain a deeper sense of pride and ownership, while consultants are empowered to deliver not only operational guidance but transformational brand value, steering franchises through challenges and changes with agility and positivity.
Continuous training and deliberate measurement are vital. Invest in practical communication skills across all levels, encourage leaders to benchmark and celebrate improvements, and modify methods as customer and team expectations evolve over time. Staying ahead requires regularly reviewing program outcomes to keep strategies pertinent and inspiring excellence within the franchise network.
Engagement with industry best practices and emerging ideas is as crucial as fostering internal innovation. Attend the top conferences and expos—such as the Multi-Unit Franchising Conference or the International Franchise Expo—now featuring workshops on human-centered communication. Follow podcasts and insights from consulting leaders promoting empathetic, digitally powered engagement. Whenever possible, pilot new technologies and training resources to refine the franchise’s communication and relationship-building approach.
Consultants and leaders aiming for enduring success in 2025 and beyond should recognize that technology and empathy work together. Equip your teams and franchisees to listen more effectively, communicate genuinely, and act with care—yielding results not only in revenue, but in trust, loyalty, and a lasting reputation.
